This weekend marks the Quarter-Finals of the Investec Champions Cup and Challenge Cup. After an exciting Round of 16, seven URC teams remain in the hunt for silverware across both competitions.
Glasgow Warriors vs RC Toulon
The first of the two Champions Cup Quarter-Finals featuring URC sides sees Glasgow Warriors host RC Toulon.
Scotstoun Stadium has quickly become a fortress for Glasgow this year. They are on an 11 game winning streak at home in all competitions, most recently taking down fellow URC high-flyers Leinster and clinching a knockout win against Vodacom Bulls in the Champions Cup Round of 16.
Glasgow have historically struggled in this competition, falling at the Quarter-Finals stage last season. They’ve never got their hands on the illustrious trophy, but you would think now is as good of an opportunity as ever considering their firepower and squad depth.
Toulon took down DHL Stormers by just one point in the Round of 16, posting a second-half comeback before shutting out a late resurgence by the Cape Town side. This promises to be a cagey affair but a high scoring one, based off of both sides’ try-scoring form in the competition this year.
Leinster vs Sale Sharks
Saturday evening’s prime-time fixture sees Leinster welcome Sale Sharks to the Aviva Stadium.
The hosts have been on fine form in the Champions Cup, boasting an unbeaten record including a statement win on the road against Leicester Tigers and an 82nd minute fightback at home to La Rochelle. Their Round of 16 triumph over URC counterparts Edinburgh will fuel them with confidence heading into another knockout game on home turf.
This is Leinster’s tenth consecutive season reaching the Champions Cup Quarter-Finals, having last won in 2018 and finished as the runner-up in three of the last four campaigns. The sides have only met each other once in the last 20 years, a 2023 group stage game where Leinster won 37-27. The sleeping giants will be determined to get back on track in Europe.
Ulster vs La Rochelle
Ulster narrowly shaved past fellow URC side Ospreys in the Round of 16. They’ll be hoping that their URC form will bolster their European chances and clinch them their first piece of silverware since their 2005/06 triumph of the Celtic League.
Montpellier vs Connacht
Connacht have been flying as of late. The Galway based side have won their last six games on the bounce, their best run of form for over ten years. They have the chance to seek revenge after a 33-31 loss in this fixture in the Challenge Cup pool stages.
Zebre Parma vs Dragons RFC
The only all-URC clash of the weekend sees Zebre Parma welcome Dragons RFC to Stadio Sergio Lanfranchi. Both sides had impressive wins against highly-ranked Top 14 teams Pau and Stade Francais in the Round of 16 and will feel equally as confident they can reach an illusive European Semi-Final, despite their poor URC campaigns.
Benetton vs Exeter Chiefs
Despite having a poor season in the URC, Benetton have ran riot in Europe, scoring the most points of any Challenge Cup side in the pool stages. After squeezing past Cardiff Rugby in a 73 point thriller, the Italian side face a tough match-up against Exeter Chiefs, who are on a tidy three game winning streak in all competitions.
